Moorforge Viking Settlement Writing Competition

Brought to you in collaboration with The Beacon Museum, Whitehaven and their
summer feature exhibition “Discover the Vikings”, created by Jorvik Viking Centre, York
Write a poem, story, monologue or song lyrics inspired
by the 'Discover the Vikings' exhibition promo video
Filmed at Moorforge Viking Settlement in Cumbria, a site that celebrates the area's Norse heritage and crafts, the exhibition promo video shows different aspects of Viking life.
Submissions will be judged on:
* how it incorporates research about the Viking period and Cumbria's Norse heritage
* how well it shows Viking life in an original and refreshing way
* how entertaining the piece is - imagine it being told around the fire in the longhouse, on a long winter evening
Word count guide:
Story or monologue: 600 words
Poem: 400 words
Song lyrics: 300 words (including repeated choruses)
N.B. Please do not include stage directions, props or music notation
Discover the Vikings exhibition ends: Sun 29th Sept
Submission deadline: Sun 6th Oct
Winners announced: Sun 20th Oct
Performances: Sun 17th Nov
Age category - 16+
Six winners will have their work performed and live-streamed in the longhouse at Moorforge Viking Setttlement at 4pm on Sunday 17th November 2019. The event will also feature Wolves of Dumnonia book series author, Peter Fox, reading from his debut novel, The Shadow of Fenrir.
All entries in this category will also be eligible for:
The Forge Prize for demonstration of craft and historical research
The Lyre!Lyre! Prize for storytelling with a flourish
Both prize winners can choose from:
* an afternoon in the longhouse for up to 8 people, with firewood to cook your own dinner
* an overnight stay in the longhouse, for up to 4 people, with firewood
Date to be arranged to suit
Age categories - under 8, 8-11, 12-15
Six winners will have their work performed and live-streamed in the longhouse at Moorforge Viking Village at 1pm on Sunday 17th November 2019.
Followed by a writing and performance workshop by Steve Wharton, English Lake District World Heritage Storyteller.
Overseas winners and those not able to attend on 17th November 2019 will receive a copy of Lake District Songs and Poems CD by Steve Wharton, English Lake District World Heritage Site storyteller and musician.

To inspire your writing, you might like to watch the video above, attend one of the many events at Moorforge this summer and visit the 'Discover the Vikings' exhibition at the Beacon Museum in Whitehaven. The Beacon have created a little area for writers to collect their thoughts and ideas, within the exhibition. In addition, we will recreate some of the resources online here, a virtual writing room.
